Benefits of Peppermint Oil

Peppermint or mint as it is commonly called has a scientific name of Mentha x piperita. The oil from peppermint is extracted and is used for curing coughs and colds. You can get small bottles of the oil which can be externally applied to the nose and chest and this dissolves the accumulated cough.

Peppermint might additionally be one of the only herbs to possess its own myth. In Greek mythology, Mentha was a nymph who attracted the attention of the God Pluto, but his wife Persephone attacked Mentha and stomped her in the soil. Pluto, suffering from remorse for his desire for Persephone, transformed her into a peppermint plant to be appreciated for all time.

Peppermint has high menthol content and is thus used as a flavoring in tea, confectionery, chewing gum, toothpaste, ice-cream etc. The moment you inhale the mint, you feel a cool breathe through your nasal that calms the smooth muscles of stomach, intestines and uterus.Peppermint also has analgesic properties. That means it can also relieve you from pain and aches.

If you have an ant problem, put a few drops onto a cotton ball, and place it where they gather. Ants detest peppermint oil! If you suffer from headaches, mix a drop or two with coconut oil or olive oil, and massage into the temples. This is an excellent, natural way to heal a headache!

Cures common cold: it is highly effective in curing symptoms of common cold. It reduces fever and clears chest congestion. Inhalation of this oil cures headache and sinusitis. Most of the people prefer to use peppermint oil as it is a natural herb and does not contain any harmful ingredients.

Peppermint oil can be used as a general tonic for the digestive system, as it is an anti-spasmodic and can be beneficial for disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion. It can help to prevent a build-up of gas in the digestive tract and can stimulate the production of bile and help a sluggish gallbladder.

Pregnant women should avoid the use of this tea as it can react with the hormones of the pregnant women or nursing mother and cause nausea and irritable bowel issues. It can also cause diarrhea and a slowed heart rate when over doses of the tea are taken. When the woman has a history where she has lost children due to miscarriages, this tea should be definitely not consumed.

If you have nasal issues from allergies or from being sick peppermint oil can be put in the mouth or in a glass of water to help clear up nasal issues such as runny nose, or a stuffy nose. This is from the menthol that is in an abundance in peppermint oil and is also used in a lot of nasal over the counter medicines.

For Digestion: A few drops of the essential oil in a glass of water is helpful if taken after a meal. It helps remove gas and feeling of bloating. Peppermint oil is also great for people who lacks the appetite to eat or those with upset stomachs.
